Constant's New Babylon
Constant's New Babylon

The Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuijs, known simply as Constant, was a painter, sculptor and musician. A member of the Cobra group in the 1950's and later one of the founding members of the Situationist International, he is most famous for his imaginary urban project "New Babylon". In this show we listen to one of the soundtracks he made as an illustration of what his city might sound like. The tape, marked "Bruitage" is undated but was probably made in the mid-sixties. It includes a wide variety of music, sound effects, field recording and voices, including the voice of Guy Debord.
Justin Bennett's voice-over gives historical context, making links to other music, art and architecture of the time.
Sound recording used by kind permission of the Fondation Constant.
